8 Things You Need to Know Before You Put Your Kids Into Daycare

on Sep 20, 2024

First off, I want to start out by saying do not feel guilty about having to put your child into daycare. We had both of our kiddos in daycare because we had to make ends meet; and that's ok! Everyone's circumstances are different. Entrusting someone else with your children can be daunting, especially with your first child. Before enrolling your little one, let's look into eight things that you need to know.

  1. Research and visit multiple daycares to find the right fit for you and your family. Of course you want to ensure that the daycare is licensed and accredited, but you also want to make sure other families have had good experiences and get a feel for the environment and teachers for yourself! Sit down with your partner and discuss what is important to each of you. It will help you stay grounded on the foundation you were built on. Keep in mind, even at home daycares are required to obtain a license. Check with your state to validate and research the quality of care.
  2. Take into consideration health standards. When you tour, is the daycare clean? Ask about their health policy, you will want to know what to expect if your little one is sick, but you also want to ensure they are doing their part to help stop the spread of illnesses.
  3. Ask about their curriculum or activities. Even though you might be looking for a newborn, they will be growing up there. Ask about the curriculum from 6 weeks up to Kindergarten and tour the entire facility. While your kiddos are away from you you want them to be safe and taken care of, but you also want them to enjoy their day. This is the perfect time for your little one to soak in new information, along with learning to get along with others.
  4. Ask for a schedule and their availability. This one may seem like a no brainer, but you will want to ensure the center is open on days that you need them to be, and for the hours you need. It's also useful to know the daily schedule and meal plan. Ask for a sample menu to get a good idea of the quality of food and nutrition being served.
  5. Ensure you know the tuition (and any possible hidden fees) before enrolling. You don't want to feel stuck financially and end up having to move your kiddo a few months in! Make sure you know your budget. According to a Care.com report the average daycare costs $1,300 a month in the US in. 2023. T he US Department of Health and Human Services recommends that childcare should cost 7% or less of your annual income.
  6. Ask about their communication policy. You will want to know what your little one is doing, and especially younger ones may have a hard time telling you! Ask if they share pictures, newsletters, or have any other types of communicating with parents. Some even have video monitoring so you can see what your baby is up to when you miss them.
  7. Understand there will be a transition period. Just like when you get a new job, there will be a period of being uncomfortable and learning what is expected in this new environment. Especially if this is your child's first time being away from you, understand that the first few weeks may have a few hiccups! It's completely normal to feel anxious, but try to be strong around your kids. Remember that the energy you give is the energy you get in return. Be their cheerleader!
  8. Location! Location! Location! We made the mistake with our oldest by chosing a daycare that was farther away from home and work than mom. It was close to dad's work, but mom's work schedule was more flexible. When sickness occurred, lots of travel time was required (and it will happen!). The longer you are on the road is the more time without your little one, but also the longer time your little one will be without you.

Finding childcare that fits all eight of these can be tricky, but can be done! Ask yourself, of the eight, rank which are the most important to you and your family - and start there!
