How Many Crib Sheets Do I Need?

on Mar 18 2025

It's 2 a.m. The diaper leaked, the sheet is soaked, and your baby is wide awake and not thrilled about it. This is the moment you find out whether you bought enough crib sheets.

The good news: you don't need a closet full. You just need enough that there's always a clean one waiting.

The short answer

Plan on 3 to 4 crib sheets and 2 waterproof mattress protectors.

  • One sheet on the crib
  • One in the wash
  • One clean and folded nearby
  • A fourth if you do laundry once a week, or just want breathing room

Two sheets sounds like enough until the night you need to change it twice.

How many sets of crib sheets do I need?

Crib sheets usually come one to a pack, so a "set" really means a sheet plus a mattress protector underneath it. Think of it as 3 to 4 sheets and 2 protectors. That combination lets you strip the bed, swap in fresh layers, and deal with the laundry in the morning.

How many crib sheets do I need for a newborn?

Many newborns spend their first months in a bassinet in their parents' room, and bassinet sheets are a different size. If that's your plan, you may not need crib sheets right away, but it's nice to have them washed and ready for the move.

If your baby is going straight into the crib, stick with 3 to 4 and lean toward 4. The newborn months bring the most spit-up and leaks.

How many crib mattress pads do I need?

Two. One on the mattress, one clean.

Look for a thin, fitted, waterproof protector rather than a thick, pillowy pad or topper. Babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface, so the protector's only job is to keep the mattress dry. It goes directly on the mattress, and the fitted sheet goes over it.

Quick safe-sleep check

  • Use a fitted sheet made for your crib mattress size. A standard crib sheet fits a mattress around 28 x 52 inches.
  • It should fit snugly, without corners pulling up when you tug.
  • Keep the crib bare: no loose blankets, pillows, bumpers or stuffed animals.

How often should you change crib sheets?

Once a week is a good baseline. Change it sooner after a leak, a spit-up, a sweaty night or a cold. Wash new sheets before the first use with a fragrance-free detergent.

Which fabric should you choose?

The right fabric depends on your climate and your baby's skin. A few favorites:

  • Organic cotton: breathable, durable and grown without synthetic pesticides. A great everyday choice in every season.
  • Cotton gauze muslin: light and airy, ideal for warm climates and summer.
  • Bamboo cotton blend: buttery soft with a cool feel.

Little tips that make sheet changes easier

  • Keep the spare close. A shelf or basket next to the crib beats digging through a linen closet at 2 a.m. Skip the under-crib drawer, since leaks can seep down into it.
  • Mix your prints. If one is in the wash, the nursery still looks put-together.
  • Fold the protector with the sheet. Grab one bundle and you're done.

Designed for the nursery you're dreaming of

Every Cradle Comforts Co. crib sheet starts as one of my own designs, printed on soft, eco-conscious fabric. Whether you love a botanical green nursery or waves for your little surfer, there's a print that makes that 2 a.m. sheet change a little cuter.

My own kids' crib sheets became keepsakes long after the nursery stage was over, and that's why I started this business. I wanted to design the kind of pieces families hold onto too. A little bit timeless, a little bit cute, and a whole lot of comfort.
